Johnston Farm collection [graphic]. [ca. 1890 - 1899]

The collection contains 33 photographs depicting the Johnston Farm in Piqua, Ohio. Views include the Johnston Family cemetery, the exterior and interior of the farmhouse, the barns and the spring house. Family members are pictured in views of the cemetery, the farmhouse and the spring house. The collection also contains photographs of a monument erected by the Daughters of the American Revolution in honor of the Battle of Piqua fought in 1763 and photographs of Johnston and Patterson family members at the Patterson Homestead near Dayton, Ohio. Labels attached to the verso of the photographs identify many family members.

Johnston, John, 1775-1861

Johnston was born in Ireland. He emigrated to the United States and settled in Philadelphia in 1786. In 1802 he was appointed Indian factor in Fort Wayne, Ind. and apparently took over the position of Indian agent there in 1809. In 1811 he was transferred to Piqua, Ohio, where he was Indian agent for the next 20 years. From the description of Account book, 1802-1811. (Indiana Historical Society Library).
